Plutonium
Sir, —lt is surprising to see R. F. Browne is still putting forward the “hot particle” hypothesis of alphaparticle carcinogenesis from plutonium. This hypothesis has been critically examined and rejected by numerous groups such as the United States National Academv of Sciences, the United kingdom Radiological Protection Board, the British Medical Research Council, and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement. There is an abundance of critical scientific literature on the toxicity of olutonium and other radioactive materials. Unfortunately, this is all too
often overlooked.—Yours, B. G. WYBOURNE. Professor of Physics, University of Canterbury. December 15, 1976.
