Pioneer phys. ed. course
A physical education course for secondary school pupils — the first of its tjpe in New Zealand — will probably be introduced at Methven High School next year. The course has been approved by the Education Department and will run for an academic year. Twenty-six pupils have indicated their interest in it, said the principal (Mr F. N. Wilson).
The proposed establishment of a ski academy at Methven next winter has been largely responsible for the institution of the course.
The South Pacific Ski Academy hopes to open in Methven next year, and provide ski training and education for New Zealand and foreign students.
Students must do at least 20 hours academic work a week, and those accepting the physical education option will attend school each morning and two afternoons a week.
Pupils will study the theory and practise of body conditioning and training, and the three afternoons a week will involve pupils putting their knowledge to the test in a practical manner. Pupils will have a particular sport to study and for most it will be ski-ing, said Mr Wilson.
The Mount Hutt Ski and Alpine Tourist Company has said that it will grant concessions to the students and it has also offered its coaches for the practical side of the course. Students from the academy will have their own coaches, however. Mr Wilson has received permission from the department to employ a staff member qualified to instruct in the subject, and he will be a graduate of the Otago University school of physical education.
