U.S. offer for bases spurned

NZPA-Reuter Washington The American State Department has confirmed that negotiations with the Philippines over the continued use there of United States military bases has broken down.

The department’s spokesman. Mr Robert Funseth, has announced that no fresh talks will be held until after the new Administration of Presi-dent-elect Jimmy Carter has taken office,'on January 20. United States sources had earlier reported that the Philippines had rejected an American offer of SIOOOM in aid, hoping that a better deal could be reached with Mr Carter.

Mr Funseth declined to confirm the size of the offer, but the sources had said that it was raised to SIOOOM from SSOOM recently by the Secretary of State (Dr Henry Kissinger) in an effort to reach an agreement before he and the Ford Administration left office.

The money, in military and economic aid. would be in exchange for the continued use by the United States Air Force and Navy of two large military bases.
