Prison officers’ medal planned

The status of long-ser-vice awards to prison officers was being closely studied, to give the awards an official order of precedence in relation to other Royal honours and awards, the Minister of Justice (Mr Thomson) told a prison officers graduation ceremony. “This is part of a review of official long-ser-vice awards in New Zealand, which, as well as yours include the police and the fire service awards,” he said. “Earlier this year I indicated to the Prime Minister that I would like representations made to the Queen for a distinctive prison service medal to be

instituted by Roc al warrant. "I am now pleased to say that a submission to the Queen is being prepared by the Government, and we hope to have this completed early in the year.” Mr Thomson said the medal would be struck in sterling silver, and would be of the highest quality. At the presentation eight men graduated. They are L. H. Alexander, N. Hillind, G. F. O’Neill, S. M. O’Sullivan, G. C. Smith, G. Urquhart-Ben-nett. S. I. D. Whitefield, and H. J. Te Ara Majutuwho, who received the Minister’s prize as the top cadet.
