Captain L, H. Davies, one of the men responsible for much of the progress of the harbour, has died in Westport. Captain Davies, aged 169. was harbourmaster from '1961 to 1972 when he re-i i tired. He was responsible for much of the deepening of I the harbour and the building |of the breakwater. He joined 'the British Merchant Navy (as a cadet when he was 15 !and later joined the Blue (Funnel line. Captain Davies (gained his master’s ticket | while serving with the Can- ' adian-Pacific line until he 1 I signed up with the Royal' Navy in World War II as a lieutenant. "He served seven years! with the navy and finishedwith the rank of lieutenantcommander. Captain Davies, came to New Zealand with! Captain Holm in 1956 with! the Holm Shipping Com-' pany. He brought the! (Holmwood on its delivery; (voyage to this country. He; was the master of several of the Holm ships, (the Holmburn and the Hol-; mlea, before taking the job ; of harbourmaster in West-; port in 1961. i Captain Davies is survived [by his wife and one son. 1
