Planners will drop veil of secrecy

Future meetings of the Canterbury 7 Regional Planning Authority’s executive committee will be open to the public. This decision was reached at a meeting of the authority yesterday when Mr M. R. Carter said that by holding executive meetings in committee, the authority was in breach of the Public Bodies Meetings Act. The chairman (Mr D. B.

? Rich) at first claimed that the . executive meetings were not s covered by the act, but after ' consultation with the secre--5 tary (Mr M. von Tunzelmann) he said this was incorrect, ijand that the meetings were tiopen to the public. “If you like to rule. . .” ’ said Mr Rich. “It’s not for us to rule, i We have no option hut to s comply with the act,” said the Mayor of Christchurch . (Mr H. G. Hay).

Mr I. G. Clark said he wondered if admission of the public would stop “thinking in private, which, badly reported, would make us look even sillier.”

The Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr B. O. Williams) said that the executive was not a secret society, but some information, if released in public, could cause planning chaos. It was agreed, without a vote, to comply with the act.
