Watchful eye on teacher surplus
The Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) has said that all i bonded and fourth-year I teachers will have positions: when schools open in February — if they are willing tor go where the vacancies are. 1 Mr Gandar said that if any second, third, and fourth-' y ear teacher* w ere without; positions >n January. he’ was also prepared to consider any reasonable proposals from his department after consultations with the> Educational Institute and the’ Education Boards’ Association. Employ ment prospects for teachers would be carefully Matched by the department.! and education boards would' report regularly, so that a national picture could be seen. Mr Gandar said. The new continuous staff- i ing scheme had created some; anxiety for voung teachers. ‘ The new teacher-pupil ratio; of one to 31 had made iti necessary to reserve posi-i tions for teachers beginning* their certificated service, he said. For that reason. no; basic scale positions had; been advertised in the prim-1 ary service since July. Vac-I ant positions would probably be advertised as early as I February. Mr Gandar said. ’
Resignation* and rein rnents of teachers were now 'oeing received daily by boards, so that many more ( positions would be available [before schools opened in ’February, he said. Teachers would be appointed to these (vacancies a* they occurred. Mr Gandar said that edu-l (cation boards were now ap-i pointing first and secondvear teachers within the] timetable set by the Educa-; jtion Boards Association and the N.Z.F.I.
