Strike may cost export markets
PA Wellington The recent strike by Air New Zealand engineers could have cost strawberry growers their valuable export markets, said the managing director of Turners and Growers (Mr J. M. A. Forsyth).
The strike had come at the peak of the season for Auckland growers especially, and because strawberries had to be delivered almost immediately, they could not be stored for delivery later. This meant that growers had had to sell strawberries locally and at a slightly
lower price because of the over-supply, Mr Forsyth said.
He predicted that growers would not lose a lot of money fro mthe situation, but said they might lose future markets overseas.
“People overseas will have had to look for the produce elsewhere, and so our growers will have to regain their confidence,” Mr Forsyth said.
Export strawberries were the best quality, he said, and were selling from between 10c and 20c less than usual for this time of year.
