Call for more tourist facilities
P A Dunedin More tourist development. particularly accommodation, should be allowed in key national park areas such as Mount Cook and Milford Sound, the Minister of Tourism (Mr Lapwood) said in Dunedin. Mr Lapwood said he had been trying to explain to members of National Parks Boards that national parks overseas did not lose their general attractiveness by having tourist village developments within their confines. He mentioned as an example the Banff National Park in Canada.
“Mount Cook is something that has to be discussed,” he said. “We could and should have more accommodation in national parks, but we have dedicated people on parks boards who would like to keep the parks close to their natural state. “For New Zealanders and overseas visitors to get the greatest appreciation of the parks, we should have easy access to them and adequate accommodation and other tourist facilities.” Mr Lapwood said a village able to accommodate about 3000 residents would be adequate.
