Addington Market Good lamb sale, but hoggets easier

A yarding of more 1200 prime lambs had a good sale at the Addington market yesterday. Hoggets, however, were easier throughout, in spite of steady interest from a southern buyer. Prime light to mediumweight steers were not far short of last week’s rates, but heavy steers again drew limited demand from retail buyers. Store sheep, particularly wether hoggets, were in keen demand, but most of the store cattle were several dollars a head easier. Prime sheep Prime hoggets had an easier) sale in the prime sheep section,' but the ewe market was very satisfactory. The prime sheep yarding was] 1460. which was not large for! this time of the year. It com-: prised a good selection of both hoggets and ewes, practically all! of them spring shorn, A much larger lamb sale earlier in the day probably took the edge off the hogget market, for values were a steady $1.50 below- the best of last week's sale. Only a small proportion of hoggets bettered $l5. As well as steady local competition. there was regular inquiry from a southern buyer, although he purchased within strict limits. The ewe market was very close to the rates of last week, when numbers were very small. However, it no doubt reflected the slightly improved export schedule. Prime sheep values were:— Best hoggets, $15.30 to $l6, with odd sales to $17.30. Medium hoggets, $13.70 to $l5. Light hoggets, $l2 to $13.50. Four-tooth wethers, $l2 to $l4, Best adult ewes, to $9. Medium ewes, $7.40 to $3. Others ewes, $6 to $7. Woolly ewes, to $11.50. Leading sales of prime sheep included:—

Store sheep * Store hoggets and store lambs made up the bulk of the store 1 sheep yarding, and they met a strong demand at rates well !n line with those of last week. Shorn Corriedale wether hoggets ranged from $10.50 to $14.50, and Coriredales and Romneys with a little more wool to SI 5.90. Several pens of store lambs appeared to be very well sold. : Prices ranged from $11.50 to ; $12.10. at which they were fully [ up to export value. Sales of store sheep included:— ; Breeding ewes: Lands and Survey Department (Weka Block), 84 , mixed-aged Perendale ewes at . $10.20 (Ruru Block). 90 mixedaged Perendale ewes at $lO.lO. Hoggets: Puinappa Farm! (Rang! ora), 46 shorn ewes at : $15.60; M. W. S. Trolove (Kekerangu), 124 shorn Corriedale ewes at $17.40. Prime cattle , Light to medium-weight prime cattle had a reasonably good sale, but heavier cattle again drew rather limited support from the retail trade. This week’s yarding was 484 head, and close to retail requirements. Few heifers were included, but there were more cows than this market requires. After opening on an easier note, the market for light to medium steers firmed to last week’s rates. However, it was inclined to vary, until a steadier demand again set in towards the finish. The small selection of heifers had a firm sale, and cows con- ' tinued to sell mainly at manufacturing schedule rates. Heavy steer beef sold at $23 1 to $24 per 1001 b (50.5 c to 53c ' a kg), medium-weight at about $27 <59.5c), with choice light1 weights to $3O (66c a kg); heifer ! beef at $26 (57.5 c a kg); and I cow beef at $l7 to $2O (37.5 c ' to 44c a kg). ‘ Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $214. Bunz (Ladbrooks), 1 at $125. Store cattle

Store cattle values were often easier. The sale, which drew a yarding of 445 head, w r as followed by a small gallery for a November sale.

Yearling steers again made up, most of the entry’, and the market here was patchy, with some cattle $5 to $7 easier. Best yearling Angus steers sold to $B7, but this was an isolated price. Average steers ranged from $7O to $77, with small to medium cattle at $54 to $6O, and tail-end lots down to $35. Well-grown heifers in forward condition sold to $67; otherwise the smaller cattle sold regularly at $35 to $45. A few pens of two-year-old steers ranged from $lOO to $l3l. Sales of store cattle included:— G. N. Grigg (Mount Somers), 40 yearling Angus heifers at $59 to $67: Marawera Farm Partnership (Waiau), 36 yearling Angus and Angus-cross steers at $7O to $77; P. G. Cunningham (Port Levy), 21 yearling Angus-cross steers at $B7. Dairy cattle For the class of beast on offer, i the market for nine dairy cows was as good as could be expected. A moderate selection of heifers i ranged from $lO6 to $122. and ! the best of the cows, with calf at ! foot, to $l4O. Vealers i The vealer market held up . quite well. The yarding of 215 ihead was much larger than ! usual. For most weekly markets, it would have been above requirements. but yesterday the demand was quite steady throughout. Quality was better than for some weeks, although there were still cattle which w’ould have been better placed in the store pens. Few sales were made at $lOO or more. Generally, the heavy veal sold at $BO to $9O, with medium-weights at $65 to $75, and small and light cattle down to $45. On estimated hook weight, best veal was fetching $2B per 1001 b, or 61.5 c a kg. Fat pigs Fat pigs had a stronger sale at values about 82 ahead of last week’s rates. The yarding was of average size, and proved adequate for the trade's requirements. A sizeable yarding of choppers made a slight recovery'. Values were:— Light porkers, to $47.50. Medium and heavy porkers, $43 to $56. Light baconers, $57 to $65. Medium baconers, to $7O. Choppers, to $56. Store pigs Store pig values made a good recovery. As well as local competition, there was steady inquiry from a Kaikoura buyer. The yarding was a little bigger than usual, and quality was good average. Breeding stock had only a fair sale, but quality was not particularly good. Values were:— Small weaners. $l6 to $l9. Good weaners. $2O to $23.50, Slips, $24 to $27. Small stores, $2B to $33. Large stores, to $39.
