FUTURE STAR?
An 18-yearold Wellington sprinter, Peter Allen, has the ability to make his mark in open competition this season and could even prove a fitting successor to another Wellington sprinter, Bevan Smith, as the country’s top man over the longer sprints.
Allen made an unexpected appearance at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday and the manner in which he won the senior 200 metres in 22sec impressed all who saw it. Two weeks earlier, he ran even faster on his home track — 21.8 sec.
He owes his present level of performance to the expert guidance of the former Canterbury all-rounder, Barbara Beable, now living in Wellington. The pair met for the first time at a coaching school at Queen 1 Elizabeth II Park in Christchurch two years ago. Allen travelled down from Wellington for the
school, at which Mrs Beable (then Miss Poulsen) was one of the coaches.
Since then, they have worked together. Mrs Beable, a former Canterbury sprint champion and still a smart mover in any company, is satisified with the progress being made by her young pupil and is confident that he has the ability to reach the top. Last season. Allen fin. ished runner-up to Peter Beguely (Auckland) in the New Zealand junior 200 metres final. In this he had the satisfaction of finishing ahead of another young sprinter considered to have a very bright future, Gary Henley-Smith (Auckland).
