“Marriages of convenience”
Sir, — A statement by the Minister of Immigration on marriage of convenience, reported in your Saturday edition, has again caused us great concern. I want to assure all your readers that there is absolutely no truth in his claims. I know of no overseas students marrying a Kiwi just for the sake of staying here. And I can call upon many New Zealanders who have associated with overseas students to support my point Mr Gill claims to have ample evidence to support his statement. I hope to arrange for a member of the Opposition to see the evidence. And if he fails to see any, I think Mr Gill will owe all overseas students an apology, particularly to those who are married to New Zealanders (not counting the majority of married couples who have returned to our homeland after their marriage). — Yours, etc., D. LAU. President, Canterbury Malaysian Students’ Association. October 30, 1976.
