Environmentalism in Square
Eight environmental organisations are holding a joint display in Cathedral Square as part of environmental pride week of the New Zealand-wide community pride month. The most unusual facet of the week-long display—to the relief of the organisers and numerous spectators in yesterday’s cold weather — is that it is sited in an “airhouse,” a prototype structure held up by air pressure, which is maintained slightly greater than that outside.
The structure is held down by 1000 cubic feet of water in bags round the base. The groups holding displays are the Environment Centre, Ecology Action, Compaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Native Forest Action Council, Clean Air Society, Campaign for Non-Nuclear Futures, Friends of the Earth, and Bicycle Planning Committee. More than 3000 people passed through the display in five hours yesterday.
