Surprise loss in draughts

Tile defeat of Charles Johnstone (Feilding), match play champion of New Zealand, by Tom Dowling (Greymouth) was the surprise result in the first round of the South Island draughts championships being played in Christchurch. Dowling was in excellent form and scored convincing wins in two games. Jack Dowle (Christchurch), the defending champion, was held to ad raw by Bob Rudd (Greymouth). In the remaining games in the first round George Hadlee (Timaru) beat Owen Thomson (Christchurch), Roy Noonan (Christchurch) beat Dave Stanley (Christchurch), Ralph Dixon (Greymouth) drew with Jack Williams (Christchurch). Eight more rounds remain in the tournament which will continue through the week-end.
