'The Press’ to defend charge
The Christchurch Press Company, Ltd, will defend a charge of breaching of the Criminal Justice Act. The charge will be heard in the Magistrate’s Court next month. Counsel for “The Press" (Mr J. E. Ryan) yesterday sought an adjournment until November 25 for a fixture. Two other news organisations, TV2 (Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon), and New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd, publisher of the “Christchurch Star (Mr T. M. Abbott), are similarly charged. They will defend their charges on the same date. Mr N. L. Bradford, S.M., granted ail three adjournments yesterday. The alleged breaches relate to proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court in June, when John Gerald O’Brien, member of Parliament for Island Bay, was charged with indecent assault on a male. It is alleged that the three organisations published reports which contained particulars likely to lead to the identification of Mr O’Brien. The charges were laid under section 17 of the Criminal Justice Act Amendment, 1975, legislation which has since been repealed.
