Divers clear beaches

Several New Zealand divers are helping to clear a section of beach and seabed on the Queensland coast in preparation for the multinational Kangaroo Two military exercise. Led by Chief Petty Officer Diver M. Miedema, of Devonport, the men of the Royal New Zealand Navy operational diving team from H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel in Auckland, are working with Royal Australian Navy clearance divers, cleaning the sea bottom along an area of the coast north of Rockhampton to make way for today’s landing by 3500 United States Marines. The beaches for the landings are part of the Australian Army’s Shoalwater Bay extensive training area where there will be an exercise land battle in the next few days involving 11,500 troops including the 400 men of the 2/1 Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, from Bumham Military Camp.
