Drivers’ injunction possible

PA Auckland The Northern Drivers Union is still considering an injunction against oil companies’ ordering tanker drivers to carry out nonnormal duties, according to the union secretary (Mr G. H. Andersen).

“The matter is still under consideration,” he said commenting on a report that the union had to drop plans for the injunction because the Motor Spirits Distribution Act would prevent such an action.

The injunction relates to the drivers’ being ordered to deliver to Caltex outlets after pumpmen had declared the Caltex depot “black”.

The seven Caltex pumpmen involved in the dispute decided yesterday to continue their strike over the management’s insistence on its right to operate the flow valves in the pumpmen’s absence. They plan to meet again on Thursday. Meanwhile the Storemen and Packers Union secretary (Mr M. C. Jackson) hopes to meet the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon).

Oil companies are still catching up with deliveries to service stations which ran dry or low during last week’s shutdown.

An industry spokesman said he hoped the position W’ould be overcome by the week-end. although the companies were making added deliveries because the Caltex depot was still closed.
