Strong bowls side chosen
A strong Canterbury team has been announced to meet Auckland in the Welch trophy, symbol of provincial indoor bowls supremacy, at Nelson tomorrow. Auckland beat Canterbury in the same fixture last year, so Canterbury will be all out to avenge that defeat. The Canterbury team is Ora Bate, Lloyd Bellis. Leon McLennan, Trevor Austin, Barrie Weir, Bob Ludbrook, Gary Barnes, and Alf Williamson.
Auckland has caused some surprises by omitting three top players, “Sen” Smith, Barry Pridham and Graham Taylor, all very experienced in this type of play. lan Smith and Les Dunn will presumably be skipping with A. Wood, B. Kinnard, J. Barr. D. Foster, I. Wheeler, and R. Fleming. One round of pairs, singles, and fours will be played tomorrow afternoon, and the reverse games tomorrow evening. The New Zealand final of Rothmans will be played on Sunday morning with South Otago playing King Country' in two games lasting an hour and a half each. The King Countrv team is not yet known, but South Otago will play Mrs N. Pringle, B. Pringle, Miss F. Lams, R. Bottlng (s.l, Mrs L. Smith, Mrs I. Black, W. Garrick. A. Bennington is.).
