International race for Avondale
PA Auckland A new race to be staged by the Avondale Jockey Club this year was announced yesterday at the annual meeting by the President, Mr R. J. McElroy. Run on the same day as the Avondale Cup, December 15, the new race will be a sprint, run at weight-for-age and named the Concorde. Riders will be by invitation only. “The main sponsor of many who had been attracted to the Cup meeting will be British Airways. The Concorde was a joint Anglo-French venture and In line with this,” said Mr McElroy. “Leading riders from both the United Kingdom and France will be at Avondale for the two days. We will also have a top Italian jockey here, together with the best Australian and our own New Zealand riders. This year, for the first time, the Avondale Guineas will be run this year over 2000 m and the stake will be raised to $12,000. Further stake increases announced by Mr McElroy were:— Stewards’ Handicap, to $7000; Founders’ Plate, to $12,000; Whitbread Stakes, to $12,000: Rawson Handicap, to $6000; O’Loghlen Gojd Cup, to $8000; Morrison Handicap, to $6000; Championship Stakes, to $18,000; Avondale Cup, to $40,000.
