No haste on limit
PA Auckland No South Pacific country was likely to rush a unilateral declaration of a 200-mile fishing limit, the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday before leaving for the South Pacific Forum at Suva. Mr Muldoon said that he was confident New Zealand’s view on the 200-mile limit would be shared by the other nations at the forum, which would be devoted to the law of the sea New Zealand would prefer to wait until May, when a law of the sea conference would be held in New York, and a multilateral agreement on a fishing limit could be reached, Mr Muldoon said.
"It would be easier to deal with other countries if no unilateral decision was made,” he said. The other topic for discussion in Suva will be the mining of the deep seabed.
