Lively play in Hurunui cricket
In spite of the introduction of a bye in the Hurunui senior cricket competition some lively play was seen in the first day of the 1976-77 season. Culverden looks the better side in its match against Cheviot and United appears to have the advantage over Scargill. Both Cheviot and Scargill have been put out for 96 in the first innings. The state of the matches is: Culverden 182/7 dec. met Cheviot all out for 96United 155 met Scargill all out for 96. Waiau a bye. An undoubted feature of the first day’s play between Culverden and Cheviot was the fireworks style batting of Culverden’s Garth Smail and Marty Loffhagen. Smail batted a quick 44 runs and Loffhagen made an equally hurried 29. Graham Doak batted steadily through the first innings to score 66 runs for Culverden. Culverden’s Don Wethey made the most outstanding catch of the day when H. Macfarlane (Cheviot) hit a high ball, Wethey misjudged the catch, but was able to throw himself backwards to catch the ball a fraction of an inch before it hit the ground. Making a welcome return to senior cricket after a lapse
of eight years w r as Colin Heslop, a former Ellesmere representative who played his first game for Culverden on Saturday. Cheviot was two players short and two Culverden primary school boys, Dariel and Shane Amyes, stepped in to fill the gap and did some fine fielding. Fielding in the match between Scargill and United was excellent on both sides and the wickets flowed easily on a grass pitchScores Culverden 182/7 declared (G. Doak 66, G. Smail) 44, M.
