Slight fall in jobless

PA Wellington The number of registered unemployed in New Zealand fell slightly in the last two weeks of September, the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) said. The national total fell from 5877 on September 17, to 5387 on October 1 — representing 0.45 per cent of the labour force. During this period, the number on special work increased by 78 to 7986. In addition, there were 104 employed under the private 'sector subsidy scheme, in Northland and Gisborne. At October 1, there were 275 school-leavers registered as unemployed — 43 less than at September 3.

District statistics, with figures in brackets the totals at September 17, included:— Blenheim 89 (108), special work 15 (108); Nelson 125 (122. 182 (183): Greymouth 26 (33), 193 (191); Christchurch 178 (196), 581 (585); Timaru 56 (59), 99 (99).
