Price complaint gets results

The Railways Department has reverted to lower freight charges, after a complaint by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association that the department had increased its charges during the price freeze. The association asked last month for a Ministerial investigation of an alleged breach of the pricefreeze regulations by the Railways Department. The association’s director (Mr 1. D. Howell) said at the time that the department had increased prices by up to 189 per

cent, by changing the category under which boats on trailers were carried in rail ferries. Mr Howell said yesterday that the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan), had confirmed that the department would revert to the original charging category while the price freeze was in force. "We are completely satisfied with the positive action taken by the Minister. Iwcause it is essential for a Government department to abide by the price-freeze regulations which have been imposed,” said Mr Howell.
