Grand Canyon wins

NZPA-Reuter Paris The New Zealand horse, Grand Canyon, caused a surprise at Autei/il when he won the $20,000 Prix de Compiegne hurdle race after leading from start to finish.

Grand Canyon, ridden by the New Zealand amateur jockey, Brian Tims, repulsed all attacks from his rivals during the 3900 m race and won by half a length from Piomares. It seemed that Mr D. W. Samuel’s gelding might be overtaken as he was tackling the last two obstacles, but his jockey managed to widen the gap over his pursuers on the flat.
