Shortage of sports fields
Sir. — 1 read with interest in “The Press” a letter from J. S. Burford regarding Wainoni Park. As president of the Aranui Cricket Club let me state that the reason there is no sport played on that ground is because of vandalism and desecration of cricket pitches by his young neighbours. It was common to find a heavy roller turned on end in the middle of the wicket or through boundary fences. Even the pavilion would be broken into at least three or four times a season. Sure two of the best wickets are sitting there idle. If J. S. Burford is the same J. Burford who plays for the New Brighton Cricket Club, then surely he is aware that these facts are true, especially as the New Brighton club shared a wicket with Aranui there. I do not blame the City Council for not wanting to waste time and effort there. — Yours, etc., W. E. SHILTON, President, Aranui Cricket Club. October 8, 1976.
