Case of the bare knees

Sir, —- As the writer of the article “The case of the bare knees,” I wish to explain that it was not a complaint against the Consumers’ Institute, but rather a story outlining the difficulty of proving that one is right, aside from taking legal action. Certain aspects of the case need clarification. The hem was not unpicked in my presence by the complaints officer. I unpicked it before visiting the institute. The hem lining did not appear to show much surface wear in the prevailing light. On further investigation it showed much more wear than the lining inside the coat lapels. The comment “it would be hard to prove”, was made by the complaints officer after he had heard the story, and before he examined the coat. “The position of my kneecap hasn’t changed.” — Yours, etc., SANDY SOUTHON. October 8, 1976.
