Fu Manchu out, too

PA Wellington A reference to a Government back-bencher as “Fu Manchu” was ruled out of order in Parliament yesterday. During a speech about the Estimates for overseas trade Mr J. G. O’Brien (Lab., Island Bay) was interrupted by shouts of “Rubbish” from Dr I. J. Shearer (Nat., Hamilton East).

Mr O’Brien stopped his speech, and asked who was “the fellow” who was interjecting. He then referred to Dr Shearer — who sports a drooping moustache — as “Fu Manchu.” The expression was objected to by the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon), and the acting Chairman of Committees (Mr W. F. Birch) asked Mr O’Brien to withdraw it.
