Fire down below
Four fire engines were sent to the Karepo, berthed at Lyttelton, yesterday afternoon when fire broke out in the ship’s galley. A cook had begun to prepare the crew’s evening meal when a pan of fat caught fire. The chief steward (Mr Les Matthews) was called, and an attempt was made to extinguish the fire with bags of salt. This failed, as did a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, and the fire brigade was called. The fire was soon under control, and there was no danger of its spreading to other parts of the ship.
