PHILOSOPHY—PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT The vacancy arises because of the appointment of Professor H. A. Montgomery to a Personal Chair of Philosoph.y. Besides being experienced in University teaching applicants should be active in research and have a substantial record of research publications in the fields of Philosophy within which their particular academic and research interests lie. Professorial salaries are at present established within the range $NZ16,806-$21.176 ;per annum having regard to the qualifications- of the candidates concerned. ENGLISH—LECTURESHIP The English Department seeks a person qualified to teach mediaeval English literature. Ability to teach the later mediaeval period up to the early 16th venture may be an advantage. Commencing salary will be established according to qualifications and experience within the scale for Lecturers—SNZB674 x six annual increments ■ $10,725 per annum. In normal circumstances, a Lecturer whose services have proved satisfactory to the Council may expect in due course to be given the status of a Senior Lecturer (salary maximum 512.610 per annum, but in exceptional eases the Council may extend this up to $13,658). The successful candidate would be required to take up the Chair on a date to Ve arranged. Either a medical or a nonmedical graduate would be an acceptable candidate. The Council requires that a person with particular experience and skills in either pharmacology or clinical nharmacology should also have a good background and working knowledge of the other subject. The primary responsibility of the Professor will be the teaching of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology in the courses in Human Biology and Medicine. The Professor will also be responsible for graduate teaching in his subject including teaching for medical specialtv grouos and for other grouos enrolled for '•ontinuing medical education. The Professor will also be resnonsible for the component of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology associated with Phvsiologv in the oreclinlral 'ears, and nartirularlv Kith Medicine in the clinical years. DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY 1. LECTURER IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING:
The Department takes a multidisciplinary approach to the industrial processing of biological materials, and is directly involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. Applicants should have qualifications in chemical engineering and preferably research and industrial experience. Salary: Lecturer SNZB674 - $NZ10,725. 2. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY:
The Fellowship is tenable for three years. The project will be under the supervision of Professor R. L. Earle, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, from whom further information may be obtained. It will be directed to the development of biological methods of treating industrial wastes in New Zealand.
Applicants should have a higher degree and research experience in wastewater treatment technology and be knowledgeable in the field of biological processes. Commencing salary will be SNZB674 together with a travel grant of up to SNZI4OO. Applications, including a brief curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, close on November 15, 1976. 3. POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP:
An opportunity is presented for a suitable person to undertake studies towards a Ph.D. degree within this department. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will carry out research in the area of microbiological transformations of steroids, particularly bile acids. At present, bile acids are exported from this country, but distinct possibilities exist for converting them into higher value products by a microbiological process. The appointment will be for three years with a stipend of $2700 per annum. Further details may be obtained from Dr R. Chong at the above address.
