Govt move ‘restrictive’
The Leader of the Values Party (Mr Tony Kunowski) has accused the Government of “political gerrymandering” in deciding to keep only four Maori seats in Parliament.
"The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has not given one solid reason for making this restrictive move,’* he said. "One is forced to conclude that he is only doing it because National has no chance of winning a Maori seat.”
Mr Kunowski said that the Values Party, in its 1972 manifesto, had advocated seven Maori seats in Parliament — a figure based on the size of the Maori population at that time. “The 1976 Census figures will probably show that the Maori people are entitled to more than seven members of Parliament if they are to be represented on an equal basis with the pakeha,” Mr Kunowski said.
