Maori seats
Sir.—Once again we hear the bleatings from Labour M.P.s about the number of Maori seats in Parliament. There have been only four Maori seats since 1880 and consecutive governments intended to abolish separate
representation, but never did. However, as National has two Maoris in Parliament representing general electorates, this makes six Maori M.P.s now. I have yet to see Labour put up Maori candidates in marginal nonMaori electorates, and only they stand to gain, by increasing Maori electorates. Maoris claim they want complete equality and rights (which they have now). Then separate Parliamentary seats should be abolished as soon as possible. I believe the present situation creates divisions, and the sooner all are called New Zealanders the sooner we can claim complete racial integration and stop petty politicking by Labour to gain publicity.-— Yours, etc.,
C. G. MARSHALL. September 16. 1976.
