Checks on teachers’ purchases

The Department of Education is trying to stop staff from making private purchases through official order books. In a circular read to members of the Christchurch Technical Institute Council, the department said that discovered breaches would lead to cancellations of contracts, ■or fines under the Public Revenues Act.

The letter referred especially to the purchase of materials at Governmentcontrolled rates through the Government Stores Board.

To curb the practice, the department said that outstanding accounts would be checked to make sure that employees were not using public funds for credit; and that purchases by education authorities would have to be typical of materials the purchaser could be expected to deal in.

Any dealings making the supplier think he was servicing an educational authority, when the materials were to be used privately, would, be subject to penalty, said the statement.

The director of the institute (Mr J. D. A. Hercus) said that any such examples were “very limited” in the institute’s order books.
