Police 'not warned'

The Deputy Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr R- H. Duff) has denied that he warned the police that there might be trouble at Monday night’s Lyttelton Borough Council meeting. Some residents went to the meeting to present a petition to the council, protesting lagainst the lack of action in (dealing with the unstable [hillsides which threaten the town.

In “The Press” yesterday, jit was reported that one of the protesters, Mrs L. Schenikel, had been told that Mr Duff had warned the police, iin case the petitioners had •to be forcibly ejected from 'the meeting. ' Mr Duff said yesterday that I this was not true. He said ;he had “absolutely no contact I with the police” before the meeting, and was not exIpecting trouble.
