Aust. market dull

Australian stock markets closed on a mixed note yesterday, in dull trading conditions. Share prices had retreated across a wide front initially before late buying support materialised to help lift some sections out of the doldrums. The market leader, BMP, jumped 14c to 870 c after sinking as low as 842 c, as did the Wales at 540 c — after an early upset. Amatil, Hooker and Tooth showed slight improvements, but Myers. Comalco, ANZ, National. Lend Lease, and CSR were sold down. EZI plunged 10c to 365 c in sympathy with its Ranger partner, Peko-Wallsend, which incurred a heavy loss, falling back 30c to 530 c. BH South shed 11c at 195 c and Hamersley eased 4c to 232 c. Bougainville, North BH, and Robe River were slightly easier. Poseidon stood out with a strong performance; the stock was able to recapture the 100 c mark after a 16c leap, to recoup a great part of fast week’s losses.
