Thimble and the Big Clock
Thimble Brownmouse must get down from the big clock, but the cat is waiting below. Part 5 of Tikumu’s story . ..
“That’s Captain Tatters,” Thimble squeaked. “He means to kill me." Her legs shook and she felt faint with fright. But Gumberling was angry. “Captain indeed." he cried. “He’s no ship’s cat. I’ll deal with him.” He tore off his gumboots and. hanging over the side of the clock top. pelted them down. The bright little boots whirled in the air and dropped byCaptain Tatters. The last two hit his striped back.
But the cat paid no attention. “The gumboots are too tight,” Thimble said misei ably. “Don’t be frightened I will save you," replied Gumberling. He thrust his black head forward' and shot < thread boldly down the side of the clock. “What are you going to do?” cried thimble. She peered over anxiously "Wait here.” he com manded. “I'm on a secret mission."
