‘U.S. plans Gulf base’
NZPA Sydney The “Sydney Morning Herald’’ has reported in a front-page story that Australian defence officials had learned of a secret United States plan to build a major air and naval base in the Persian Gulf. The report said that the base was planned for Safaniya in Saudi Arabia and was designed to ensure Western-controlled access to the oil-fields of the Persian Gulf. “Plans for the base have been kept so secret that the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Malcolm Fraser) admitted on Friday that he knew nothing about them,”- said the “Herald.”
