Soccer coach quits
Speculation that the Woolston Working Men’s Club is prepared to pay a new coach $2OO0 —probably more than double the honorarium of any other Broadlands southern league club—were denied last night by the president of the club’s soccer section, Mr Jim Murray. However, he confirmed that the club’s present player-coach, Ron Provan, has resigned. , According to sources in the club, Woolston was prepared to pay $2OOO a season for a coach or player-coach, particularly a well-known figure whose name might attract new players to the club. Mr Murray said the matter
had not yet been discussed, but the club had rules on what amounts could be paid on honorariums, besides which he would like to see the present young players develop further. Just before the transfer deadline this season, Provan considered joining Technical, but decided to stay. However, his dissatisfaction with certain aspects of soccer at the club was made wellknown to the Woolston committee. Confirming last night that he leaves after the season (finishes—Woolston has one Igame to go—Provan said he felt he bad had enough of |coaching the club. I “I am dissatisfied now with!
the senior soccer at Woolston and a lot of players feel the same way. Many players weren’t willing to give enough to soccer, and it was hard to discipline them because there were not enough players. But I would like to stay in coaching if I can—l will wait and see what happens,” Provan said. Not long ago Woolston had the unenviable record ot being merely a social team but this image has improved largely this ..eason. and credit is due mainly to Provan. On the playing side also, 1 his record is sound. The ' side’s performance this 'eason—Provan’s first as coach —has been much tighter.
