Sugar Fox fancied at Matamata

Special correspondent Auckland Sugar Fox, a winner on the course two starts back and since then at Paeroa, will be heavily supported in her bid to make it three straight in the Rockfield Handicap at Matamata today. The race is the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the Matamata Jockey Club’s restricted programme. The second leg is the Waikato Handicap, which looks more open than the first.

Sugar Fox took a maiden 1600 m at Matamata on August 14 with a very good effort, and scored over 2200 at Paeroa on September 1 in a field smaller than but similar to today’s. A four-year-old by Sugar Apple, Sugar Fox has made steady improvement since joining W. J. Bromby’s stable and it would seem she has merely needed time to show her ability. She might improve a bit yet. Pura Seta looked ready to win soon when fourth to Wanbin over 1600 m at Te Rapa on August 21. The time before she weakened to ninth after running prominently over today’s 2030 m on August 14.

My Reward finished strongly for fifth to Pure Glory on August 14 and ran Sugar Fox to a neck at Paeroa.

Chiquatito might be the best of a number of possibilities in the Waikato Handicap. She was a close and unlucky fourth at Tauranga on August 24 and has been given time to recover from the race, her first since May. She looked good once or twice last season, no more than when splitting Ascending and Mer’cler in the A.R.C. Royal Stakes. Her weight today will be reduced by an apprentice allowance. Vindora is honest. His last four starts have brought three seconds and a first at Paeroa. In his win he gamely kept out Caruba, which went on to score easily at Wanganui. Battle Supreme won well at Avondale and Arigato was

a good winner at Tauranga. Prefer and Bunvaro, both making fresh starts, could also be worth consideration, as could Noess, which has been freshened since running well at Riccarton.
