Murder appeal to Lords

An appeal by Robert Douglas Roulston against his conviction for the murder of John Beamsley at Ashburton in April last year may be heard by the Privy Council.

Rbulston is petitioning the Privy Council for special leave to appeal against the judgment of the New Zealand Court of Appeal. His counsel (Mr S. G. Erber) will leave Christchurch for London early next month.

The petition would probably be considered by the Privy Council about October 20, Mr Erber said yesterday. It was not known when

the.council would announce its decision, he said. If leave to appeal were granted, documents covering the case so far would be sent to London, and a date set for a hearing Roulston, a 24-year-old labourer, shot and killed Beamsley at an Ashburton flat on April 25 last year. Roulston had been drinking earlier and had taken LSD at the flat He was found guilty of murder by a jury and sentenced to life imprisonment by Mr Justice Roper at Christchurch m October.

An appeal by Roulston against his conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in July.
