Gisborne water

PA Gisborne Gisborne’s water supply crisis has been averted in time to meet industrial demands today but domestic supplies will still have to be boiled.

About 1.5 M gallons of muddy water remains in the city’s system. The Gisborne city engineer (Mr H. C. Williams) said that his staff, working in atrocious conditions, have done a tremendous job clearing the pipeline blockages which robbed the city of fresh water on Friday and Saturday. “Eventually, we had to build a miniature dam with steel plates and sandbags to divert the flooding away from the pipeline where the blockage was. “Then we drained this with pipes and managed to get the blockage cleared.”

Mr Williams said that three Ministry of Works divers had worked in water up to their necks in the flooded stream.
