Saying she regretted the lack of confidence of many women to enter public life, the Leader of the British Opposition (Mrs Margaret Thatcher) emphasised the importance of this characteristic.
It was her experience that the proportion of confidence in men as in relation to their ability was far greater. Her all-female audience responded with laughter and applause.
It was rumoured that the men of Christchurch were indignant that Mrs Thatcher had agreed to address a women’s group. Their last-minute requests to be included were refused. The Cambridge Room at the Christchurch Town Hall was filled to capacity with more than 200 women.
