Warning about diabetic drinks

PA Wellington The Health Department was concerned that some diabetic drink preparations were being promoted as foods especially for children and for non-diabetics, the director of the department’s Public Health Division (Dr C. M. Collins) said. “People wishing to adopt restricted calorie diets or save money are tempted to use nonnutritive sweeteners in place of sugar. “Sugar is a food and il should only be replaced where medical practitioners or dieticians have directed that it is an undesirable constituent of a

person’s diet,’’ Dr Collins said. There was no proof that non-nutritive sweeteners were suitable for everybody. Their unrestricted use, especially by growing children, was not desirable, he said. The department, has asked the makers of nonnutritive sweetners to label their products correctly, and state in their advertising that the products were only for diabetics. he said. “The department will forward a submission to the Food Standards Committee, proposing additional labelling of all diabetic foods to help ensure proper use,” Dr Collins said.
