Take-over acceptance expected

NZPA Canberra The Australian Government is expected to make an announcement shortly that it now accepts Indonesia’s military take-over of East Timor, according to diplomatic sources in Canberra. Australia has been critical of Indonesia’s intervention in the former Portuguese colony, but the sources said acceptance of the fact was necessary for continued good relations with Indonesia, and was “inevitable.”

It is understood that a statement may be made in Parliament this week on the issue, which at times has strained relations between the two countries. The Prime Minister (Mr Malcolm Fraser) is scheduled to make a State visit to Indonesia in October, and the sources said Australia’s acceptance of the annexation of East Timor into Indonesia would be made before then. This would ensure that Mr Fraser began his talks with President Suharto on a “firm and friendly” footing.
