Compensation on new basis

Parliamentary reporter The Cabinet yesterday decided that the Public Works Amendment (No. 2) Bill that was introduced to Parliament last year by the previous Government, and now lies before a select committee, would be withdrawn, said the Minister of Works and Development (Mr W. L. Young). . The bill promoted special compensation provisions for property owners affected by! the Clutha Valley develop-( ment, but the Government has decided that the more liberal provisions envisaged should be applied to land required for all public works, not only the Clutha. j

“A new bill will be drafted and introduced as a matter of urgency,” Mr Young said. “This action is in line with the Government’s Election manifesto to grant generous compensation when land is taken in the public interest. “The compensation will be based on the principle of providing a home, or farm, or commercial property of comparable standard. ! “In effect, the Minister of j (Works and Development will Ibe authorised to purchase ! and/or develop property and offer it by way of compensation in exchange for properties required for a public work, as an alternative to cash compensation,” said Mr Young.
