Carriers to try for price rise
PA Wellington Road transport companies wil] ask the Ministry of Transport for urgent “hardship” relief from the pricefreeze. A detailed submission on the financial state of the road transport industry has been prepared bv the Road Transport Association and will be presented to the Secretary for Transport (Mr A. J. Edwards) on September 7. The report will be given to Mr Edwards the day before the association is due to resume its award talks with the Drivers’ Federation. The association is worried that many carriers are now running at a loss because of rapidly rising costs. It believes it would be able to justify a cartage-rate increase under the “hardship” clause. The traditional 11 per cent cartage-rate margin allowed on actual costs has now fallen to per cent, it says.
