New look for old hotel
The Oxford Hotel, on the banks of the Avon in Colombo Street, will be remodelled in the style of an old English pub and coffee house It will have a family-type .e--staurant, the first of its type in the South Island. The work will cost almost $500,000 and will turn the former hotel into something similar to the New Zealand Breweries Cobb and Company restaurants in Auckland. Taupo, and Hamilton, and another in Wellington, the 1860 Victualling Company, all of which the company says have been most successful.
I The plan allows the public to have access to dining areas without having to enter the bars. The new Oxford, which will seat 150 in the restaurant. 110 [in the public bar, and 65 in the private bar, will have beamed and timbered ceilings, columns, leaded glass windows and various historic displays. It will emphasise the views of Victoria Square and the Avon. Work on the hotel is expected to begin before Christmas and the restaurant and bars will open tn mid-1977.
