R. J. Skelton wins award
PA Auckland The Auckland jockey, R. J. Skelton, was named New Zealand racing personality of the year at the Racing Writers’ Association’s annual dinner at Trillo's Downtown. Skelton was presented with a trophv bv the champion trotting driver, P. T. Wolfenden, who won the award last year.
Wolfenden deputised in this role for the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet) who was prevented from attending by Parliamentary duties. Skelton won the award after a poll in which 50 racing journalists throughout New Zealand participated. His brother. W. D. Skelton, won the award in 1968. Other candidates were P. N. Jones, a probationary trotting driver. B P. Thomson, an apprentice jockey, D. J. O’Sullivan. G. K and W. Sanders (a partnership), and B. J. Smith, all trainers of gallopers, and C. S. Hunter. a trotting trainer. The citation, .which accompanied the trophy, said that the presentation of the award to Skelton recognised his outstanding contribution to racing in the 197576 season. He had not ridden the 100 winners everyone hoped he would, it said, but he had created nation-wide interest in his gallant attempts. He finished the season with 98 wins.
