Forum discussion for six persons

A new segment. “Soap Box.” will be seen soon in TVl’s . “Tonight’’ programme. The producer. Robert Boyd-Bell, >ays “Soap Box” is an attempt to get beyond the pressure groups for some personal reaction to current events in New Zealand. It is to be a brief, weekly item in which individual New Zealanders from different

parts of the country will be invited to give their opinions on an issue of their choice.

An initial panel of four commentators has already been selected ... the Christchurch businessman

and sports administrator, Sir Ron Scott, and Auckland lawyer Mick Brown, a Wellington actress Davina Whitehouse, and a Wellington lawyer, Julian Watts. The programme is still, looking out for suitable candidates to bring the panel up to six.

The commentators will have no specific brief except that their contributions should be topical and personal, rather than organisational opinion. The programme could turn out to be a little different from the norm, because there is provision for a right of reply from individuals or organisations if they are judged to have been directly criticised by the comment. “Tonight” will offer equal air time to anyone so affected, provided the option is exercised within 48 hours of the original broadcast.

Obviously all the programme content must observe the laws of libel and defamation, and the producer must reserve his right to the final selection of who appears in the programme, but “Soap Box” is an attempt to broaden the area from which views and reaction to current events are regularly taken.
