Fund started for driver's family

Donations for the family of Walter John Chisnall, the taxi driver who was killed on August 12, were still being received, said the president of the Canterbury branch of the 1 axi Drivers’ Federation (Mr K. W. Peat).

Local donations were being made to taxi drivers and were being held in a special account for Mrs Chisnall, he said.

Donations were also being collected by taxi groups in other parts of the country. These would be forwarded when they were completed.

Manv donations had heen anonymous, Mr Peat said.

The public’s response had been gratifying.

Nothing had been heard from the Labour M.P. for Sydenham (Mr John Kirk) since his Private Member’s Bill seeking safety devices for taxis had been deferred, he said.

The bill may be pre sented again later.

Two business firms had contacted him with suggestions to improve security for drivers. Some people had also called with ideas that they thought could be useful, he said.
