Appeal target $146,000
The Canterbury branch of the Society for the Intellectually Handicapped yesterday launched an appeal for almost $150,000.
The money will go towards building a new preschool and special care centre at Bishopdale, and two 10-bed hostels at Avonside. The self-care training (toilet and washing) facilities at the present Avonside pre-school and special care centre will also be enlarged. The total cost of the work is $359,000. About $213,000 will come from subsidies. The remaining $146,000 will be met by the society, and already about 40 gifts totalling $38,500 have been received. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay), the patron of the appeal, has called for whole-hearted support from the community. The president of the society (Dr R. T. Caseley) said the present rented family homes were unsatisfactory. The two new 10-bed hostels were a “dramatic improvement” in the quality of care ihe society could offer for the children and adults living in them. For Christchurch particularly it was a great step forward in the improvement of community-] based facilities for the intellectually handicapped and their families. The advance gifts chairman (Mr A. B. Harman) said that without the buildings
the number of children getting care would probably be ’limited.
It is hoped to raise the ] money by subscriptions, I which may be given over (three years at intervals chosen by the giver. People can also designate money for a particular area of the buildings, which will bear the .giver’s name. The latest gifts are: Miss K. 'Adams. S7B; Mr and Mrs N. AllIcock. $100; Mr J. Bradshaw. $480; 'Dr R. A. Cartwright, $150; Mr iA. F. Crothall, $300; Dunlop N.Z (Ltd. $1000; T. D. Harman and Sons. $1350; Mrs C. Hawkins, $7B; Lane. Walker and Rudkin Ltd. $750; Messrs Moyle.
